Rotarians visiting the A&N islands (Map – Annex. ‘A’ & Profile ‘B’) after the TSUNAMI disaster discussed & worked with local affected people, community leaders, Trade & Chamber of Commerce members, social & community workers, and Government & Army personnel. The ‘Hands-On’ involvement led to the assessment, that many of the remote islands lack the necessary expertise for the review of medical conditions of patients and rendering appropriate real time medical advice. Analysis of various options led Rotarians to the conclusion that a need exists for real time access to and consultations with medical doctors and other experts located at Port Blair, mainland India and around the world. Recent technical advances provide the answer through the use of TELEMEDICINE facilities (About Telemedicine – ‘C’). The Project is for setting up 6 Telemedicine facilities at Government Health Centers. It is estimated that to install equipment in a phased manner, at the Centers and to train personal to efficiently handle the facility, will take about TWO year for the project to be completed.
